Religious freedom is one of the hard-earned rights that we enjoy as Americans, and this right is one of the basic foundations of our country. In the First Freedom Student Competition, a national essay contest, high schoolers and homeschoolers are encouraged to explore the importance of religious freedom, both in America and world-wide. Students will be writing on the topic of international religious freedom and whether this freedom should be part of United States foreign policy. Additionally, the essay should address if individuals are responsible for advancing this international human right. Final essays should be between 750 and 1,200 words and need to have a supporting bibliography. Homeschoolers will have the opportunity to strengthen their analytical writing skills and hone their research skills, as well do a study of the First Amendment.
The contest is open for students in 9th-12th grades; the homeschool teacher may sponsor one student per class. Registration deadline for the contest is November 23rd, and the final essay (six hard copies as well as a cd) must be mailed in, postmarked no later than November 28th, 2009. Winners will be announced on April 13, 2010 (Thomas Jefferson's birthday!) Cash prizes will be awarded at three levels.
