Relics Antiques has one of the best selections of antique lighting in Charleston, SC, especially if you are looking for antique gas style chandeliers and the earliest eclectic lighting. They have things you cannot find anywhere else. Most antique dealers just have traditional crystal glass chandeliers. Much of what can be found elsewhere is formal 1920’s, 1930’s ordinary things.
Not only do they have some of the most interesting lighting, but they also have some of the oldest that have never been electrified - only using candles. Some of them actually were made to use gas as well as electricity, and they were used in the in-between period before electricity was completely accepted. They are really interesting and are truly nostalgic. They were the most modern, advanced kind in their day.
Most of the fixtures were originally in grand mansions. Some are gothic style in black metal. A few of their pieces are so old they were made for oil lighting and are still all original with no changes.
The glass globes and shades can make or break an otherwise beautiful brass chandelier and they have some of the best decorative shades in Charleston by far. Some of them are etched glass, some are frosted, and some are molded into all kinds of beautiful shapes and colors. Most antique shops in Charleston do not have this variety.
They have wall hanging fixtures that are very decorative and unusual as well as outside lighting.
Victoria Doyle manages the shop. She is there most of the time and happy to answer your questions. She owns the shop along with her husband Dan, who is the lighting man, a true lighting enthusiast who enjoys working on old fixtures and knows all the technicalities.
