With San Diego Comic-Con looming, Sony announced today release dates for three tent-pole projects.
The first film to be released is “Uncharted 3,” which is set for a June 10, 2016, release. A release date that was previously held by “Amazing Spider-Man 3.” It is a prime real estate for a film that is sure to draw moviegoers from across the world to see. Based on the popular video game series of the same name, “Uncharted” follows treasure hunter Nathan Drake. Seth Gordon (“Horrible Bosses”) will direct the action-adventure film with David Guggenheim providing the latest draft of the screenplay.
Next on Sony’s agenda is the “Amazing Spider-Man” spinoff film, “Sinister Six.” That film will release November 11 2016. The film will be written and directed by “Cabin in the Woods” helmer Drew Goddard.
This comes to a surprise to many after what many saw as a failure with “Amazing Spider-Man 2.” Bringing in $706 million at the box office, “Amazing Spider-Man 2” was not only less successful financially than its predecessor, but also less successful critically. Reigning in a score 53% on Rotten Tomatoes as oppose to the 73% the first film in this rebooted franchised scored.
These factors coupled with recent comments by writer Alex Kurtzman in an interview with Collider stating the future of the franchise was "all up for grabs. Kurtzman not only wrote the film but also was apart of Sony’s brain trust for the “Amazing Spider-Man” franchise it seemed to spell the doom for Spider-Man.
Notorious big game movie scooper Umberto Gonzalez aka “El Mayimbe” of Latino-Review also tweeted on July 19 “RIP Sinister Six," which fueled talk of Sony ditching their original plans.
Obviously everyone’s concerned was premature as the studio looks to be moving forward with the franchise with the third installment hitting theaters in 2018.
Sony Motion Pictures Group prexy Doug Belgrad had this to say about the release dates, “With ‘Sinister Six’ in the hands of writer-director Drew Goddard, we feel extremely confident placing the film on a prime date in 2016.”
Belgrad went on to add, “June 10 is a great date for ‘Uncharted.’ It’s just the right place for this exciting action-adventure film.”
