Release Date Round-up

There's been a bit of reshuffling and nailing down of release dates for some upcoming handheld heavy-hitters lately, so here's a quick rundown of some of the big games you'll be playing later this year.

Super Scribblenauts (DS, Fall)

Previously known as Scribblenauts 2, this super sequel will be available during the not-entirely-vague period of "fall".  Maxwell returns with his notebook which brings to life whatever you write inside--and now, players will be able to use adjectives to modify their creations.  No longer will you be left wanting when you wish your summoned vampire was a little more angsty (or your woodchipper a little bigger).

Kingdom Hearts: Birth By Sleep (PSP, September 7)

The latest installment in the Square-Enix-slash-Disney crossover series takes place ten years before the events of the original game.  Players control Terra, Aqua, and Ventus--three Keyblade masters-in-training--as they search for the missing Master Xehanort.  Gameplay is the same action/RPG combat familiar to series fans (with a few twists) and a few new multiplayer modes.  The game will also be released as a bundle with a "Mystic Silver" PSP-3000, a 4GB memory stick, and an unnamed movie.

Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker (PSP, June 8)

There's less than a month to go before you can jump back into Big Boss's sneaky shoes for some good old-fashioned stealth action.  Taking place in 1974, Peace Walker has Big Boss's Militaires Sans Frontières mercenary group (which would later become Outer Heaven) coming to the aid of the beseiged people of Costa Rica.  The first handheld installment helmed by series creator Hideo Kojima, Peace Walker promises big action and a twisty plot.  Co-op gameplay (four players for boss missions and two players for all others) is not only an option, but encouraged for getting through the tougher missions.  Peace Walker will also be available in a bundle with a camo-style PSP-3000, a 4GB memory stick, and a voucher for a movie downloaded from the Playstation Network.

Dragon Quest IX: Sentinels of the Starry Skies (DS, July 11)

For those of you feeling a little masochistic, Square-Enix brings us the latest installment in the venerable Dragon Quest series--and the first one to launch exclusively for a handheld.  Developed to be the most difficult game in the series yet and supporting four-player multiplayer (local only), DQIX will have RPG fanatics screaming in anger alongside their fellow questers throughout the hot summer months.
