Relay Foods featured in TIME Magazine

This post is from Relay Foods' blog. In case you've missed my posts about my beloved RF, you can catch up here and here.

In case you missed it, TIME Magazine is out with a story in this week’s issue (subscriber access required) describing the benefits of Relay Foods’ unique neighborhood pickup grocery model. Calling Relay “the leading startup” among grocers embracing ‘click-and-collect’ services, TIME says:

“It’s a savvy strategy. Although services like FreshDirect are popular in cities, their delivery method isn’t ideal for suburbs, where customers may be many miles apart.

“Pickup ‘turns that economy on its head,’ says Relay Foods president Arnie Katz. ‘Instead of three deliveries per hour, we can do 20’ pickups at no cost to the customer. (Delivery is available for a fee.)

“Moreover, nearly 30% of Relay’s groceries are sourced from local suppliers, which is the No. 1 reason that Karen Shatin, a 35-year-old living in Alexandria, Va., says she uses it.”

The article also poses a key question: “If you still have to leave the house, is pickup really that much better than normal shopping?”

As the reporter, Christopher Matthews, puts it:

“So far, the answer appears to be yes. Relay says it’s adding 1,000 new customers per week, and similar startups, like Farmigo, have recently entered the space. ‘The traditional grocery is going to continue to lose ground,’ says Demeritt [a retail industry consultant]. ‘That leaves an opening for creativity.’”

We agree. By combining cutting-edge online shopping technology with the quality of farm-fresh food and the convenience of local pickup or home delivery, Relay Foods is rapidly changing the way people get their groceries – simplifying the process for customers and creating new avenues of growth for local farms and producers.

We serve our customers through a streamlined network of fulfillment centers and pickup spots that enable market coverage of hundreds of square miles without the crippling last-mile costs typically associated with e-commerce. Our commitment to long-term efficient growth has allowed it to develop one of the most dynamic and sophisticated online grocery platforms at a fraction of the capital used by other industry leaders. Our business model is unique, lightweight and scalable.

And Relay’s product selection rivals any traditional grocery store and is virtually unmatched by online competitors because we have developed strong partnerships with local farms, producers and stores to stock a full array of natural foods and everyday groceries.
