February is my favorite time to ski in Utah. Typically, we’ve packed up the inches of famous Utah powder, we’ve overcome the crush of the holidays and the weather often is sunny and bright—a perfect bluebird getaway.
I had the chance to visit Deer Valley’s only privately owned lodge recently and get to know The Goldener Hirsch Inn better. And having been recently voted the country’s “Best Ski Boutique Hotel” in the World Ski Awards, what’s not to love here?
To start, you’ll receive the finest of service from every staff member. Ski valet every morning and evening, check. Fire started in your room at your request, check. Turndown service, check. Elevated dining, check. Yodeling, check.
That’s right, I said yodeling. It’s all part of Goldener Hirsch Inn experience that will surprise you around every corner.
During the winter season, from 2:30-5:30 p.m. daily, pop by the Alpen Stube at Goldener Hirsch for après ski featuring culinary creations by Chef Ryan Burnham. The European-style menu includes traditional-sounding items like poutine pumped up a notch with slow-braised lamb and Beehive Cheese curds covered in gravy over lots of fries ($19) or the decadent Goldener Hirsch Fondue ($42) with chunks of baguette for dipping. Both are large enough to share with four or more hungry, post-skiing adults.
Additional options include a grilled cheese made with Gold Creek Smoked Cheddar on a baguette with comforting tomato soup ($16) or an antipasto board with smoked meats, artisan cheeses, olives and pickled veggies. Selections change daily along with the price.
As for the yodeling, entertainer Elsbeth Gugi and her accordion-playing companion are scheduled to perform each Thursday. There are sing-alongs, duets and more.
If you’re staying the night in one of Goldener Hirsch Inn’s 20 rooms, you’ll enjoy cookies and hot chocolate in the early evening, a fire in your private room if you’d like as well as hand-carved Austrian furniture, Aveda spa products, feather bed covers and gorgeous views from the private patio.
Included with your room is a complimentary winter European breakfast for each guest served from 7-9:30 a.m. Non-guests of Goldener Hirsch can enjoy the continental buffet for $20 per person or the full buffet for $30 per person. We enjoyed our full buffet next to a roaring fire. Juices and coffee along with pastries and yogurt parfaits are served buffet-style at the bar while you’ll place your order for a hot entrée with your server. The hands-down favorite of the morning were the ricotta pancakes—light and fluffy with a little tang—perfect with lemon butter and Vermont maple syrup and a side of bacon. Read the paper, watch the snow fall or chart your course for a full day on Deer Valley's slopes as your skis are sitting just outside the door thanks to the ski valet.
