Relatively tranquil and chilly weather, potential for late week storm looms (Video)

Another in a series of fast moving clipper systems passed south of the Capital Region overnight, and brought some very light snow to the region. It was a chilly start to the morning across the area as temperatures has dropped into the teens. High pressure to our north will exert its influence on our weather through the day today, bringing some brightening to the skies.

Wednesday, high pressure is forecast to remain in control, thus a mix of sun and clouds is forecast, and temperatures look to rebound a bit, back into the 30’s for highs, followed by a clear and cold night for Wednesday night.

Clouds should begin to increase during the day on Thursday, as a low pressure system moves toward the region from the center of the nation. Though the storm system itself looks to take a track from roughly central Iowa on Thursday morning to western New York Friday morning, of concern is the potential for a secondary coastal system to develop over the Carolina coast. Should this occur, and the energy from the two systems congeal, the potential exists for a sizable snowfall over the Capital Region during the period from Thursday night through Friday night. Stay tuned for later forecasts and statements concerning this storm.

High pressure looks to build in behind the storm for the weekend. Unlike previous high pressure areas that have essentially stayed north of the region, thus keeping us in cooler westerly and northwesterly flow, this high pressure area looks to sink south of the region toward the Carolina coast by Sunday. This causes the low level winds to shift southerly as we head into the new work week, which could spell some above normal temperatures by that time.
