Chris Brown pled guilty to one felony account regarding the February assault of his then girlfriend, singer Rihanna. He received sentencing in June that consisted of five years probation and 180 hours of community service. He is to stay 50 yards away from Rihanna and 10 yards away from her at entertainment events.
His public apology came yesterday and can be viewed on www.youtube.com/watch. I am sure his attorneys scripted it and made sure he delivered it when the timing was right. I suppose this closes the public loop of this unfortunate incident.
I am glad that Brown mentioned his past experiences of domestic violence growing up, and his desire to not repeat his family's patterns. Hopefully for Brown, there were not other factors involved in his impulsive and violent behavior such as drug or alcohol use, which can make treatment more difficult.
He mentioned that he is receiving support from his spiritual counselor and his mother, which is very important ,but I would also hope that he is in a counseling program that will give him practical tools.
Any man who may find himself in a similar situation might want to check out support groups that address violence and family patterns. Hearing other mens' stories can be very helpful in not feeling isolated and ashamed. www.menstoppingviolence.org/index.php is an organization that men can turn to for support if they find themselves in need.
