Monday at midnight, the federal government will begin to shutdown after the Senate rejected a bill that would have kept the government running but delaying Obamacare by a year, led by U.S. Senator Harry Reid (D-NV) and refuses to meet with Republicans according to U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) in released statements to the media on Monday.
All 46 Republican U.S. Senators voted against tabling the bill.
Cruz, a few minutes ago, was highly disappointed with Reid's decision to block consideration of the House-passed Continuing Resolution to avoid a government shutdown.
“Democratic Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid had the opportunity this afternoon to avert a government shutdown. Instead, he chose to kill the House’s bill to keep government open, a deliberate act to move towards a government shutdown. This is no surprise,” said Cruz.
“After the House acted Saturday night, Sen. Reid refused to call the Senate back to service, instead leaving senators at home on vacation while a shutdown loomed. And he has apparently advised the President not to meet with House and Senate leaders of both parties. Harry Reid wants a shutdown, because, sadly, Democrats are putting politics above the needs of the American people.”
Cruz pointed out a New York Times report on Sunday that explained that the Democrats believe “now is the time to break the power of Tea Party Republicans”.
The Times said that Senator Dick Durbin (D-IL) said Mr. Reid’s resolve not to compromise has been helped by the shenanigans in the House, what he views as game-playing in the Senate by hard-liners like Ted Cruz, the Texas Republican, and a sense that now is the time to break the power of Tea Party Republicans.
Mr. Boehner called Mr. Reid’s move “an act of breathtaking arrogance”, the Times reported.
While the Democrats are willing to shut down the government and complain that the Republicans are being destructive when it comes to Obamacare, the Democrats policies of ignoring how consumers feel about Obamacare which now stands at 39% in support.
Not widely reported in the mainstream news, Todd Starnes of Fox News reported that 17 Democrats in the House voted with Republicans on funding the government and delaying Obamacare for one-year.
"This is exactly the kind of DC-based thinking that makes Americans disdain Washington, DC. Democrats need to listen to the people and start working for the millions of Americans who are losing their jobs, wages, and healthcare benefits because of Obamacare,” said Cruz.
“This is not a debate over a government shutdown; it is a debate about how Obamacare is plaguing our economy,” Cruz continued. “I will continue working to make sure the government stays open and Americans receive the same benefits as giant corporations and Congress under Obamacare.”
“Until then, I hope the American people will continue to speak out against this disastrous, train wreck of a law and make DC listen.”
