At the regular meeting of July 16, Houston City Council voted to repeal the designation of Reid Memorial Methodist Church as a protected historical landmark. The church was founded in 1941, under the direction of Bishop A. Frank Smith and pastor Mouzon Bass, and met the structural requirements for historical landmark designation. Owners of historical landmarks must commit to strict standards for maintaining the exterior appearance or restoring the structure with approval from the historical commission. Council approved the designation in ordinances 2008-21 and 2013-25. Subsequently, it was found that the pastor of Reid Memorial Methodist had undertaken the historical designation process without sufficient authority from the denomination. Because the denomination was unwilling to commit to the preservation of the building under the historical protection guidelines, the designation had to be rescinded.

Reid Memorial Methodist includes a 64,000 square foot lot located at 5203 Fulton, and across from the new Lindale Park station on the Metro Red line. It includes the sanctuary, offices, and adjoining buildings suitable for a school or daycare center. The building was the home of the Hispanic Casa de Alabanza Church for over 20 years, inviting all to come to see “Milagros y Sanidades” (miracles and healing). It was headquarters for Club Revolution 122, a youth evangelism ministry. However, it now appears vacant with overgrown shrubs and signs in disrepair, and the property is for sale.
