Reid finishes in the top ten in Olympic women's skeleton

According to the Sochi 2014 website, Calgary native Sarah Reid finished in seventh place in the women's skeleton competition at the 2014 Olympic Winter Games in Sochi on Friday.

Reid posted a total time of 3:54.73 and was 0.43 seconds back of Russian Elena Nikitina who won the bronze medal. Elizabeth Yarnold won the first gold medal of the 2014 Olympic Winter Games for Great Britain. Yarnold, who won the World Cup in Calgary on November 29, posted a time of 3:52.89 with American Noelle Pikus-Pace winning the silver medal with a time of 3:53.86.

Reid actually had an excellent fourth heat time on Friday. She posted a time of 58.15, which was tied for the second fastest skeleton time, only six one hundredths of a second back of Yarnold. The other skeleton driver to post a time of 58.15 was Mellisa Hollingsworth of Lacombe, Alberta, who won a bronze medal in women's skeleton for Canada at the 2006 Olympic Winter Games in Turin.

In the men's competition, Alexander Tretiakov of Russia leads Martins Dukurs of Latvia by a commanding 0.56 seconds heading into heat three on Saturday (8:00 a.m. mountain time, Sportsnet).
