Reid, Dodd channel Ted Kennedy at the grave

In the heat of intense negotiations to strike a debt reduction deal on Congress' so-called 'super-committee,' Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nevada, told a group of lobbyists that he and former Senator Chris Dodd, D-Connecticut, ventured to the grave of Senator Ted Kennedy in an apparent attempt to 'channel' the late Senator's ability to forge compromise agreements with Republicans.

Politico reported this information today in a story that described the behind the scenes maneuvering that took place in the hours leading to the breakdown and failure of the negotiations.

According to the report, Dodd poured whiskey over the grave while Reid said a prayer:

In the thick of the negotiations, Reid, too, recalled the days when deal makers could bridge the partisan divide. He visited Ted Kennedy’s grave in Arlington National Cemetery with former Sen. Chris Dodd. Dodd poured some whiskey on Kennedy’s grave while Reid recited a prayer, the majority leader told lobbyists at a meeting, according to attendees. He told the group that he missed both men.

Conservative radio commentator Rush Limbaugh immediately jumped on the story on today's show:

According to Politico, Harry Reid's big contribution to the process was this. "In the thick of the negotiations, Reid ... visited Ted Kennedy's grave in Arlington National Cemetery with former Sen. Chris Dodd." Snerdley, I want you to listen to this. Tap him on the shoulder and listen to this. "In the thick of negotiations..." Snerdley's screening calls right now, and he doesn't listen to the show when that happens.

I want you to listen to this for when people call about it. "In the thick of the negotiations," Dingy Harry decided to have a Hillary Clinton/Eleanor Roosevelt moment. He took Chris Dodd; they went to Arlington National Cemetery; they wanted to commune with Senator Kennedy over what was happening. Chris Dodd "poured some whiskey on Kennedy's grave while Reid recited a prayer," I kid you not. This is reported in The Politico. The only thing missing was a waitress lying down on the grave with Chris Dodd then lying down or laying down on top of the waitress. Sort of a postmortem Dodd-Kennedy waitress sandwich.

So Dodd's pouring whiskey on the grave; Dingy Harry is reciting a prayer. Harry Reid told this story to some lobbyists. There were witnesses. That's how The Politico knows about it. These are the kind of people that we're dealing with. These are the leaders of our nation. These are the statesmen seeking guidance. They go to the grave of Senator Kennedy at Arlington and pour some whiskey on the grave while reciting a poem in the thick negotiation, and we know this again because Harry Reid bragged about doing this to a bunch of lobbyists to show them how committed he was to the process. I kid you not.

Needless to say, whatever channeling may have taken place at Kennedy's grave did not work. The super-committee failed due to the unwillingness of Democrats to adequately address the 15 trillion dollar debt that only continues to grow by the second.

The committee, to which Newt Gingrich referred as one of the absolute worst ideas ever conceived by Congress, was doomed to fail from the very beginning. This Administration has spent the nation into oblivion, leading to a downgrade of the U.S. credit rating and taking the country to the brink of complete economic collapse. And with no real plans to address the problem adequately--massive cuts in runaway spending--there was no way for the committee to reach an agreement.

The committee was charged with the task of cutting only 1.5 trillion over a period of 10 years out of a debt totaling 15 trillion. Such an objective  is laughable given that realistic economists admit that an immediate cut of at least 9 trillion is the only course of action that will save the nation from economic catastrophe.  At one point Senator Tom Coburn, R-Oklahoma, proposed the full 9 trillion in cuts. The most Democrats were willing to muster was 3 trillion.
