According to Sen. Harry Reid, D-Nev, it's apparently Ted Cruz's fault that he gave CNN's Dana Bash the answer he did regarding children with cancer, going by audio posted Wednesday at Real Clear Politics. Politico's Dylan Byers, in the meantime, was busy covering for the Senate Majority Leader by trying to make people believe that Reid didn't say what he said, Newsbusters' Tom Blumer reported.
Bash asked why Reid did not support a GOP measure that would help children with cancer.
"But if you can help one child who has cancer, why wouldn’t you do it?" she asked, according to a transcript provided by Blumer.
"That's a f--," Reid began before being cut off by Sen. Charles Schumer, D-N.Y.
"Why pit one against the other?" Schumer asked.
"W-W-W-Why would we want to do that? I have 1,100 people at Nellis Air Force base that are sitting home. They have a few problems of their own. This is — to have someone of your intelligence to suggest such a thing," Reid stammered.
"I’m just asking a question," Bash said in response.
"Maybe means you’re irresponsible and reckless," an angry Reid spit back.
But Reid later tried to blame it on Ted Cruz and the House Republicans.
"The whole answer is this: Why would we want to have the House of Representatives, John Boehner, cherry-pick what stays open and what stays closed," he said, seemingly forgetting that the Constitution gives the House the right to do exactly that.
"Listen, I gave a speech on the floor talking about the babies, 30 babies. Little kids who are not going to have clinical trials, of course I care about that. I have 16 of my own grandchildren, five children. But I also care about the Centers for Disease Control, which in the last few weeks discovered a terrible outbreak that killed people, they found by what their expertise that they had, it was coming from pomegranate seeds that came from some foreign country. They’re not working today, looking for the next scourge that infects people. The fires they put out every week in America, it’s because they are good. CDC is basically closed now," he continued.
"So, What I told Dana Bash who is a fine reporter, is that we care about all these things, we care about our state parks, our veterans, but we can’t fall into that trap," he said, apparently forgetting that he called Bash "irresponsible and reckless" to her face.
"Here is the trap, of the Cruz-led Republicans, and that is this. Listen, we’ll cherry pick. We’ll open this today and this tomorrow, and finally at the end everything will be open except the money to finish Obamacare. But what Dr. Coburn has said, this is ridiculous, because Obamacare if nothing happens, about 90% of it is funded anyway. But they are so mercenary, so determined to destroy the president’s signature issue that they would go to the extreme of shutting down the government," he added.
Blumer said all one needs to do is watch the video of Reid's exchange with Bash to know what was said.
He also tool Byers to task for refusing to mention Reid's near lapse into profanity and the way he lashed out at Bash for asking a legitimate question. Blumer went on to say that Reid probably felt safe attacking Bash, knowing that "lapdogs" in what we call the "Democrat-media complex" will cover for him.
Throughout the government shutdown debate, Reid has dug his heels in, basically telling House Republicans it's "my way or the highway" on Obamacare funding, refusing to consider a single GOP proposal and refusing to even engage in conversation with Republicans.
Reid has also fomented violence against the GOP with over-the-top rhetoric calling Republicans anarchists and accusing them of extortion for simply disagreeing with him.
But it seems that some in the so-called "mainstream media" are more than willing to provide cover for Reid.
Blumer said there "isn't a snowball's chance in Hades" that Byers would have provided such cover for a Republican in the same situation.
