The nationwide co-op sporting goods and apparel retailer REI is about to throw open the doors of its first New York City store – and the author of an acclaimed book on ultra-long distance cycling will help launch it.
The REI flagship store is located in the Puck Building at 295 Lafayette St. (corner of Houston St) in Soho. On Dec 8, Amy Snyder, who covered the harrowing, 3,000-mile long ultra-distance cycling Race Across America for her debut book, Hell on Two Wheels, will share her experience by offering a multimedia presentation at the store.
As Snyder said in an email to New York area bike riders this month, Hell on Two Wheels “follows a handful of courageous competitors who test themselves, each other, and the limits of human endurance.” She noted that she will be the first outside speaker to appear at the new store, which will have a large selection of bicycle-related goods and books for sale.
There has been a recent spate of books appealing to cyclists. One was by that well-known New York rider and columnist BikeSnob.
Written for an audience of readers who love stories of adventure and survival, Hell on Two Wheels provides a fast-paced, detailed account of the racers' ups and downs, triumphs and tragedies as they fly nonstop 3,000 miles from California to the East Coast. The book, published by Triumph, retails for $24.95. Recently it won top honors in “Health”, “Non-Fiction Narrative” and “Sports” categories of the USA Book Awards.
Snyder’s REI date is Thursday, Dec. 8 at 7 p.m. at the new store.
