While there is no REI [outdoor outfitters] retail store in Kentuckiana yet, outdoor enthusiasts can go to REI's online site (http://www.rei.com/family-adventure) and download a completely-free REI Kids' Adventure Journal (in PDF format). The free version of Adobe Acrobat Reader is required to view and print the document. The Adobe program can be downloaded here: http://get.adobe.com/reader/.
The journal has pages for the child's name, picture, places in the journal to draw pictures, as well as pages to record what they saw, how they felt, etc. The offering of this journal was originally a part of a Summer 2010 program that REI was running, beginning May 2010. It is still available online, which makes it ideal to download for autumn family activities as well. This journal is open-ended enough to allow for ANY outdoor activity, geocaching included. The REI site also offers a link to geocaching how-to videos and FAQs, as well as a downloadable "certificate of completion" for the child -- that is, once they fill in their information and complete activities. Other informational/activity sheets are available online in the same area. This Examiner especially enjoyed the sheet for new ways of making s'mores treats.
