Rehabbing Beltran hits walk-off single in Brooklyn

Carlos Beltran hit a walk-off single Saturday night in New York City—but it wasn’t for the Mets, it was for the Brooklyn Cyclones.

With the help of the veteran outfielder, who played the entire game in center field for Brooklyn, the Cyclones won 4-3 in dramatic fashion over Lowell.

The five-time All-Star played in his third game for the Cyclone as he is on a rehab stint for a bone bruise on his knee that has kept him out of action since June 21.

Brooklyn starter Darin Gorski, the Mets’ seventh-round draft pick this year, went 5.2 innings allowing only one hit and one run to Lowell. The lefty had four walks and seven strikeouts.

Gorski’s only blemish was a home run to Alex Hassan, the second batter of the game.

Luis Rivera answered for the Cyclones, as he smoked a triple in the bottom of the first, scoring the first run of the game for Brooklyn.

Sam Honeck’s double in the third inning scored Robbie Shields, giving Brooklyn a 2-1 lead.

Nick Santomauro, the Dartmouth product, continued to show some pop, with a RBI double for Coney Island team. Santomauro has a .809 OPS, which is good for second on the team. The leftfielder has been impressive in his first professional season for the Mets.

Ralph Henriquez paced the Cyclone offense with three hits, including a double.

Cyclones reliever Jake Goldberg allowed two runs in the eighth inning, coughing up the lead at the hands of the Spinners offense, 3-3.

Brooklyn closer Mike Powers earned the win by pitching a scoreless ninth while the game was tied.

But the hero of the night was a familiar face for the Mets fans in attendance at KeySpan Park. With the game on the line, Beltran sent a single into right field, and Shields came around to score.

Beltran is getting back into playing shape; he has played in four games for Brooklyn. On Wednesday, he was the DH for the Cyclones. On Thursday, he played five innings in center field. Friday, he played the field for eigth innings.

After Thursday night’s game, Beltran said he still isn’t 100 percent. The timetable for his return to Queens is still unknown at this point. He will play in the Cyclones' regular season finale tomorrow against Lowell. First pitch is scheduled for 5 p.m.

The Cyclones have clinced the Wild Card. The playoffs will begin on Thursday at KeySpan Park against the Mahoning Valley Scrappers.
