Regrowing food from kitchen scraps

Trips to the grocery store for small produce items can really add up. Tomatoes, onions and garlic are familiar offenders. How many times have you been making dinner you realize you forgot green onion for the tacos or tomatoes to go with the salad? It takes gas, time and of course money to buy these and the need for some of these essentials is seemingly never-ending. Put a little cash back in your pocket and grow these essentials yourself, from scraps you already have.

Phoenix doesn't always provide for a lot of space or nutritious soil so if you aren't equipped with a small gardening space already grab a soda bottle and a small bag of potting soil from your local nursery or hardware store, preferably organic, and get the tomato and garlic scraps growing with these steps.

  1. Cutting the bottle is relatively easy, using either scissors or a straight blade to cut the top off to the bottle and be sure to keep the cap

  2. Try to cut some slits or holes at the bottom of the bottle to allow for drainage

  3. Fill ¾ of the bottle with soil

  4. Water soil until moist like a sponge

  5. For garlic, plant 1 piece of bulb per container pointed side up and for tomatoes plant 3-4 seeds per container

  6. Cover with top of bottle

  7. Place in sunny spot

  8. Watch them grow and transplant as needed

Green onions are even easier to grow.

  1. Fill jar with water

  2. Drop in green onion

  3. Watch it grow

  4. Cut amount needed

  5. Watch it grow again

  6. Repeat

Simple steps can save serious dollars and growing your own produce is a nutritious and delicious way to do it.
