Are you living a life full of regret? If I only would have done this or that (you fill in the blank), I’m sure I would be happier today. Does this sound familiar to you? When your mind, emotion and spirit is stuck in a past scenario, you’re freezing yourself in time. Holding onto regret is toxic.
It is toxic to your mind, body and spirit. It manifests in a heavy mental weight and carrying this weight will eventually result in physical illness. Everyone wishes for a do over at one time or another but if you’re dwelling on a past choice, you are essentially punishing yourself and this lost hope is holding you back from living your healthiest future.
The bottom line here, as much as you want to, you can’t change the past. Put your effort into a better future. If you’re unable to get past a guilt attached to something you’re not proud of, free yourself by offering forgiveness.
Write a letter that enables you to release all of your feelings attached to this pain and then burn it. Mentally free yourself by visualizing forgiveness as if you’re starting over with a friend. Allow yourself a second chance by giving you permission to let go. If you’ve caused pain to someone else, if you can summon the strength, apologize. Regardless if it is openly accepted, the words alone are freeing.
If you're harboring regret, instead of isolating yourself and re-living the past visualizing a different outcome, accept that the path you took (good, bad or indifferent) was the only one you felt feasible at the time. Today you are more mature and you are more ethical and this is because of the choices you made in the past. You live and learn from past mistakes, it is what shapes you.
Open the door to this dark and gloomy space, let the light shine it. Let go of regret, forgive and free yourself. You are worth it!
