On August 29th, 2009 a group of more than 80 activists from across California got together in the Bay Area to discuss the next steps for repealing Proposition 8 in 2010. The attendees elected representatives to be part of an interim group that will make decisions while a new signature campaign structure is being shared across the state. The new structure is called the Davis Plan and it calls for an Advisory Council comprised of 50 people based on a tiered local, regional, and statewide structure. The following shows the breakdown of the council:

  • 60% Regional Representatives – 30 people across the state elected by local grassroots organizations.
  • 20% Affinity Council Representatives - selected from regional networks organized around religious, ethnic, political, business, labor, educational groups.
  • 20% Reserved for significant Organizations with a proven track record of fund-raising, leadership, organizing and/or statewide membership.

Three of the regional representatives will be allocated to San Francisco, and candidates will be elected at a meeting on September 19th at the Metropolitan community Church. The address for the church is 150 Eureka Street, and the 2-hour meeting will start promptly at 1:00 p.m. All attendees are requested to register on facebook by clicking here

The following is a rough agenda for the meeting:

  1. Working to collect signatures in solidarity with other groups who are struggling for equal recognition in other areas (immigration, healthcare, education, the environment etc.).
  2. Brief history of where we have been
  3. Explanation of the interim signature gathering campaign structure
  4. Presentations from regional representative candidates. Each candidate will have a set time to present, and the attendees will vote afterwards. People interested in running for a regional representative position should place a comment in the facebook event page stating their desire to do so.
  5. Signature gathering in the context of other ongoing struggles
    • Maine election (Paul Hogwarth)
    • Movement on the federal level and update on the DC March (Kip Williams - OSOF, Equality Across America)
