She’s not quite neo-soul and not quite r&b. A rapper - more like a poet with an MC’s flow - as well as a vocalist, up and coming Reesa Renee unveiled mad swag via the video for ‘Wonderland Cool’ yesterday to the public. For someone who’s been performing for a couple of months, she’s doing pretty darn good.
The video for ‘Wonderland Cool’ is the visual representation of her ode to being one’s own self. With a hook that sings about being fresh, cool, and fly while also being able to just breathe, the beautifully fly DMV born and bred singer/songwriter is joined in the video by local designer Kenneth “KAS” Flanagan to lend a hand in keeping her looking fresh. Reesa realizes of course, she’s too cool to go along with something she isn’t comfy with and that she can be fly simply on the merits of her individuality. And that is what makes the video directed by Jason Baustin great. While the video lacks an elaborate 24 person dance routine on top of car hoods in a parking lot in the desert or shots of luxury cars that no one on the set owns cruising down the highway, what the video does have is relevance. It visually relates to what is happing sonically. Ms. Renee is also joined in the video by about 2 dozens of some of the DMV’s finest, aka, our youth.
Earlier in the week, Reesa Renee held a video premiere viewing party at Martin’s Lounge along the U Street corridor. The event also served as the DMV's send off for Reesa as she prepares to go to NYC's famed 'Amateur Night at the Apollo'. Armed with a 5 piece band, 2 singers, and a joy in her voice and stage presence that was contagious to all, Reesa showed us her versatility and the reason why she is on the road to ascension. Starting the set off with crowd participation Reesa started rocking the crowd like she been doing this ish for years. She quickly had the house jumping as she went into a go-go/rock inspired tune that snagged anyone from the District in the room. View photos from the event here.
Reesa says that her music tells a story. I got a chance to catch up with her after her performance and I asked her just what her story is. Reesa says her story is about a girl who accidentally stumbled upon her purpose. “I wasn’t a singer” says Reesa, “I was an athlete. It was only about 3 years ago that I realized ‘Hey wait a minute, I got something here’! But when I started singing, it just felt right. It feels perfect.” So she kept it up and never looked back. Now how’s that for being fresh, cool and fly?
