Redondo, El Segundo win league titles with unbeaten records

For the first time in eight seasons, Redondo Union High School's boys' volleyball team captured the Bay League title over their powerful Manhattan Beach Mira Costa with a perfect 8-0 record.
The Sea Hawks, who are 31-2 overall and currently ranked third in the CIF-Southern Section Division I, clinched the league title by sweeping the Mustangs for the second time this season, 25-20, 27-25, 25-17, last Thursday at Mira Costa. Redondo has swept the Mustangs by 25-14, 25-15, 25-22 scores on April 15 at Redondo.
On Friday and Saturday, the Sea Hawks ended up in third place in the Redondo-Mira Costa Power Classic. They swept their pool, then swept two games from Valencia and Westlake in the playoffs before falling in two games to San Clemente, 25-20, 28-26, in the semifinals, due to a total of 15 service errors in that match.
Huntington Beach, the top ranked team in the Southern Section Division I, California and the United States, won the title with a 25-20, 25-17 sweep of the Tritons in the finals on Saturday at Redondo.
Mira Costa, which finished second in the Bay after sweeping Palos Verdes, 25-22, 25-11, 25-22, on Tuesday at Mira Costa, won its pool but lost in the quarterfinals to Carlsbad La Costa Canyon, ranked No. 1 in the CIF-San Diego Section Open Division.
Against the Sea Kings, the Mustangs (6-2 in league and 25-8 overall) were led by Blake Markland with nine kills. Roy McFarland had seven kills and setter Trevor Liu tallied 32 assists.
Palos Verdes, which took hill rival Rolling Hills Estates Peninsula in five games for third place in the Bay on Wednesday, was led by Ram Hand and Jackson Hobus who each had 11 kills and Noah Mitre with nine kills.
Also on Tuesday, the Sea Hawks finished league at 8-0 in matches and 24-0 in games by sweeping host Peninsula, 25-19, 25-23, 25-17.
Vinny Pizziti sparked Redondo with 12 kills and two ace serves. Devon Burki added seven kills and three aces, while junior middle blocker Dominic Cangialosi contributed five kills and two blocks.
Pizzuti led tghe Sea Hawks with 16 kills and three aces. Louis Richard put up 11 kills, two aces and eight digs against Mira Costa. Also against the Mustangs, junior setter Tanner Smith had 38 assists and five kills.
During this season, El Segundo and South Torrance have been big Pioneer League rivals. Also for the second time, just like Redondo did to Mira Costa in Bay League action, the Eagles swept past the host Spartans, 25-22, 25-20, 25-17, last Tuesday.
It was a match-up between the CIF-Southern Section Division II's No. 4 ranked El Segundo and fifth rated South.
The first game was close as the Eagles won on a block but El Segundo was able to win the next two games handily.
The Eagles, who are head coached by former pro beach volleyball standout Tim Hovland, also finished fifth in the gold division at the Redondo-Mira Costa Power Classic by defeating La Jolla, 28-26, 25-15, on Saturday. El Segundo lost in the quarterfinals in the gold division to La Costa Canyon before topping its cross town rival Carlsbad, 25-21, 25-18, in the fifth place semifinal.
