Redondo Union High School's boys' basketball team defeated host Palos Verdes, 64-45, on Tuesday, then heard the good news that second place Lawndale Leuzinger was upset by West Torrance, 58-46, at the same time to give the Sea Hawks their first Bay League championship in six years.
For the Sea Hawks, who improved their league record to 9-0 and are 17-8 overall with their 10th consecutive victory.
Redondo was led by junior guard Ian Fox with 13 points, followed closely by senior guard Derek Biale with 12. Sophomore guard Cameron High added 11 points.
The Sea Kings, who fell to 0-9 in league after taking their 20th consecutive Bay loss dating back from the 2011 season, were led by Conor McKeeve with a game-high 14 points. P.V. is 7-18 overall.
West, which entered Tuesday's contest at Leuzinger in fifth place, played a stingy defense as the Warriors held Olympian senior standout guard Eric Childress to just two points. Childress, a returning all-CIF Southern Section player, came into the contest averaging 16.1 points.
West, which improved to 3-6 in league and is tied for fourth place with Rolling Hills Estates Peninsula, was led by Xavier Basso with 16 points. Terrell Carter contributed 12 points and 19 rebounds.
Earlier in league at West, the Warriors were routed by Leuzinger, 64-42.
The Olympians also came into the game ranked No. 1 in the CIF-Southern Section Division IIIAA. West, who is desperate to get better hopes for an CIF-Southern Section Division IIIAAA at-large berth, is 15th in the division.
The Sea Hawks, who are second in the CIF-Southern Section Division IIA, won the league but will still have a big task in hosting Leuzinger, whcih is still in second at 7-2 and is 19-6 overall, Thursday at 7:30 p.m.
West will host Peninsula in a battle for fourth place at the same time.
The Panthers are coming off a 50-38 loss to host Mira Costa on Tuesday.
The Mustangs finish league at home against Palos Verdes on Thursday at 7:30 p.m.
After a key 72-66 home win over rival Gardena Serra in a Del Rey League showdown last Wednesday, Bishop Montgomery clinched the outright league crown by rolling over host Bishop Amat, 84-55, last Friday in La Puente.
The Knights, who are 25-0 overall and 7-0 in Del Rey play, were led byOgnjen Miljkovic with 21 points and eight rebounds. Lamond Murray, Jr. and Stephen Thompson each chipped in 18 points. Justin Bibbins had 14 points, five assists and five steals.
Bishop Montgomery moved up to third in the United States by the Maxpreps Xcellent 25. The Knights are second in California and Southern California, behind Santa Ana Mater Dei.
Bishop Montgomery hosts Playa del Rey St. Bernard in its league finale today at 5 p.m.
Serra clinched second in the Del Rey with a 66-44 home win over Bishop Amat on Monday.
Tavrion Davis sparked the Cavaliers with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Roland Wyatt tallied 12 points and seven rebounds.
Westchester, ranked No. 1 in the CIF-Los Angeles City Section Division I, continued to roll in the Western League by crushing Hamilton, 60-23, on Monday at Westchester.
The Comets were led by Matthew Grant, Cameron Young and Nick Hamilton with nine points apiece.
In a Nike Challenge Classic showdown between No. 1 teams last Saturday, Westchester fell on the short end of a 63-60 score to host Mater Dei. The Monarchs are the top ranked team in the CIF-Southern Section IAA and state. Mater Dei is sixth in the nation by Maxpreps Xcellent 25.
The Comets have a showdown at home against Fairfax in a battle of two of the top L.A. City powers tonight at 6:30 p.m. Westchester closes league at West L.A. University Friday at 6:30 p.m.
Serra girls outlast Bishop Montgomery: A few weeks ago when the two South Bay Catholic high school rivals met in a key Del Rey League game at Serra, the Lady Cavaliers romped to a 64-34 win over Bishop Montgomery.
At Bishop Montgomery on Tuesday, the Knights made a game out of it but Serra was able to hold on for a 67-66 victory.
The Cavaliers (20-5 overall and 6-1 in league) were led by Deandrea toler with 17 points. Tatiana Howard put in 12 points and Tatiana Howard totaled 12 points and had a season-high 18 rebounds. Caila Hailey, who had a key free throw that proved to be the difference in the contest, tallied 11 points and nine rebounds.
Sophia Song and Christine Delaphiu each led all scorers with 22 points each. Dani Lee put in 10 points.
The win sets Serra for its home showdown against St. Bernard Thursday at 5 p.m. The Lady Vikings, who are 7-0 in league and one game in front of the Cavaliers after their 78-76 home victory from Jan. 22, are ranked third in the CIF-Southern Section Division IVAA, while the Cavaliers are fourth. Bishop Montgomery is fifth.
Bishop Montgomery finishes at Bishop Amat, which is still No. 1 in Southern Section IA despite being in fourth place in one of the most prestigious prep girls' basketball leagues in the nation, Thursday at 7 p.m. The Knights are third in Del Rey.
In the Bay League, West Torrance and Mira Costa are still tied for first place at 7-2 after the Warriors routed host Leuzinger, 61-16, and the host Mustangs downed Peninsula, 50-32, on Tuesday.
If the two teams remained tied through Thursday, the Warriors will be declared the champions on basis of two wins over Mira Costa. West was thrown into a tie for first after losing its second league game to Redondo, 42-34, last Friday at West. The Sea Hawks (6-3) sit in third place.
In Bay League fnales on Thursday at 6 p.m., the Warriors host fourth place Peninsula (5-4); the Mustangs are at home against fifth place Palos Verdes (2-7) and Redondo hosts last place Leuzinger (0-9).
Culver City (9-0 in league) clinched its second straight Ocean League crown by nipping host Hawthorne, 33-31, on Tuesday night.
The Centaurs, who are fourth in the CIF-Southern Section Division IIA, won the game when senior point guard Taylor Tunita hit a basket with five seconds left in the game to break a 31-all tie.
Tunita led Culver with 12 points.
The Cougars, who are in second place in Ocean play at 6-3, had a game-high 20 points by Finezones Prescott with a game-high 20 points.
The Centaurs will look to finish the league unbeaten as it hosts rival Beverly Hills Thursday at 6 p.m.
Hawthorne will look to clinch second place as it finishes at Santa Monica (2-7 in league) at the same time.
