Redondo Beach Super Bowl Races attract thousands of runners

A total of approximately 7,000 runners competed in last Sunday morning's Redondo Beach Super Bowl 5- and 10-kilometer Runs.

It is the 34th annual race that is ranked one of the largest and most popular in the Los Angeles area. The first race was in 1979.

Twenty-nine-year-old hometown Redondo Beach resident Chris Foste topped the 10-kilometer (6.2 miles) at 30 minutes and 34 seconds. Finishing second and third, in order, included Luis Ibarra (age 34, Montebello, 30:59) and 32-year-old Riverside resident Gabriel Hernandez (32:10).

Long time South Bay female distance running standout Mary Akor of Hawthorne (age unavailable) was the top female finisher clocing 34:16. Placing second and third, respectively, were 35-year-old Santa Monica resident Erika Aklufi (35:56) and 23-year-old Chanel Leaf of Manhattan Beach (36:17).

In the 5K (3.1 miles), 45-year-old Joe Nitti of Calabasas topped the field in 16:12. Bruce Reisenfield (age 36, Los Angeles, 17:23) and Patrick Sweeney of Manhattan Beach (17:29) were second and third, in order.

In the women's 5K, 22-year-old Anaheim resident Rocio Pelago was first timing 18:12. Pelago won by eight seconds over runner-up Nicole Slehous (22, Newport Beach, 18:20). Taking third was Jeannette Stojeceoshi (33, Lomita, 20:17) was third.
