RedHawk Review - Highlight #3: Golden Girls

We're deep into the summer now, and the fall collegiate sports season is coming into view on the horizon. In the meantime, let's continue to look back on the highlights of the 2010-2011 athletic year. The midway point in our countdown features Miami's only team to win a national title doing just what they do best: winning another national title.

The men's hockey players might be the most-talked about residents of the Goggin Ice Center, but Miami's synchronized skating team quietly goes along winning event after event, carrying on a tradition of excellence year in and year out. That tradition was continued into a new level this season, as the collegiate skating team won its seventh consecutive national championship. It was the 13th overall championship in the program's history. The seven consecutive titles are a record for any level of synchronized skating.

A flawless performance of their Brazilian Carnival theme in Ontario, California earned the RedHawks a 96.16 score, well ahead of runner-up Michigan State's 85.17. It marked the second consecutive competition where the 'Hawks won by a double-digit margin.

The Lady 'Hawks' performances all year long were choreographed by Sarah Kawahara, a two-time Emmy Award winner for her work on the Opening and Closing Ceremonies of the 2002 Winter Olympics and for "Scott Hamilton Upside Down." This season marked the ninth year of Kawahara's involvement with the team, and the second year under head coach Carla DeGirolamo. DeGirolamo and Kawahara also guided the senior team to a second-place finish at the National Championships, and tenth place in the World Championships. DeGirolamo was nominated for Professional Skaters Association Coach of the Year.

See you at the Goggin in October when the RedHawks begin their push for title #14.
