My mother was “old-fashioned”. She thought you should sleep with only one man your whole life. So even after my Divorce, when she knew I would eventually have sex again, I felt her disapproval, her fear of being called a "Slut", being passed onto me. This fear of being a "Slut" did serve me to an extent, as I slept with much fewer men than most Women my age, which helped to keep me free of STDs. My Sexual health was a priority, at least so I thought.
I was not afraid of being disowned by the Catholic Church, I was not afraid that other people would know I had multiple partners, I was afraid of the word “Slut”, and what it meant to me. Definition Slut: by Jaime Summers: A Slut is someone who is a cheap prostitute, because basically she is Free besides sometimes a dinner or a movie. This cheap prostitute has no morals, or concern for her own body’s health or emotional wellbeing, or the consequences of her actions. She is more concerned with getting off than anything else. She will hurt other people and herself in order to do so. She bases her self worth and self-esteem solely on whether men will sleep with her, and sometimes she even enjoys it. She is the dirtiest of all Women, as so many men have been with her that she has become unclean, to the point of even the Pope’s blessings could not heal her.
Does that sound like a slut to you?
I thought perhaps I had gone overboard with the deranged idea of what a slut had become in my mind. This definition which I had formed from my possibly tainted scientific resources: my mother, television and my own sexually repressed imagination.
I decided to look up the Webster’s Dictionary Definition for "Slut".
1. Chiefly British.. Ok so only British women are sluts! Yes! I guess I am saved.
2. A slovenly woman… That makes me think of some who eats a lot… slovenly. I do enjoy my Italian sausage.
3. A Promsicuous woman... Especially Prostitute. So a Prostitute is a Slut! Or is a slut a type of Prostitute. I say, at least it’s their JOB! At least they are getting paid for it. Imagine doing it for a box of popcorn and a little self-esteem. Well I must be worth something because at least this guys willing to sleep with me. What was his name again?
4. A Saucy Girl. Oh no! I am definitely a Saucy Girl. I am in trouble now.
Synonyms: bimbo [slang], chippie (also chippy), doxy, fancy woman, hoochie [slang], hussy, Jezebel, minx, quean, floozy, tramp, trollop, wench, whore
All of a sudden my macbook became possessed by the spirit of the slut and all these windows started popping up with definitions for all of these.
- Did you know that in some countries a woman traveling alone was traditionally regarded as a "Trollop"? I’m never going to the bodega again!
- Or that "Minx" means a "Wanton Woman" which is defined as causing sexual excitement?And that Wanton means Lewd which is defined as "Wicked", making the title of Broadway’s must successful musical “SLUT”.
- Promiscuous means casual or irregular. Well I guess my period is a Slut.
- A wench is defined as a young woman, so most of you reading this are sluts.
- And that Jezebel is defined as impudent, which would make some of our men sluts. Oh wait, that’s impotent.
So I looked up the definition for “Male Slut”. What do you think I got?
"The word you’ve entered is not in the dictionary. Try emasculate." Listen ladies, you cannot make this stuff up!
So then I went back to do further research on slut and saw a little plus sign asking if I wanted “More”! I said Why Not? Go for it. Let’s go deeper into centuries of societal wounds for those of us with female genitalia!...
