Imagine this all-too-common scenario: it’s been a long, stressful day at the office and the only thing that you can think about is hitting up happy hour with your girlfriends who you’ve been texting with since lunchtime. It’s a weekly ritual, every Friday afternoon when the clock hits 5:01 pm you transition from workaholic to party girl. You get there just in time for 2 for 1 cocktails and before you know it, you have had 3 margaritas and are nibbling on fried calamari, loaded nachos and whatever other appetizers you have decided to share, adding over 2000 calories to your daily tolerance. To make matters worse, this is how you are “kicking off” your weekend.
Coping with Stress
Stress is inevitable- no matter what line of work you are in, you will always be faced with stressful situations, but it’s the way in which you choose to handle it that will define you as someone who “gives in” or someone who “fights back”. Women agree that happy hour gives them an opportunity to socialize and relieve stress, but indulging in this outlet too frequently may cause them to associate drinking as a way to mask their problems. I’m here to share with you a much healthier alternative to a traditional happy hour at your local bar-it’s a new twist on the term “happy” and you can find it at the gym!
Redefine own “Happy Hour”
The term “happy hour” is all how you perceive it. You can spend an hour slamming discounted drinks and adding 1000 calories to your waistline or you can spend that hour sweating it out and burning calories. When you exercise, you release endorphins in your body that are capable of producing feelings of euphoria and a general state of well being. This natural high will cause you to feel noticeably happier and put you into a clearer state of mind, rather than the blurred and sluggish state of mind that drinking will put you in. Once you discover the natural stress relieving power of exercise, you will want to make it a habit! There is no price you can put on that euphoric feeling!
Fit “Happy Hour” Ideas:
Be proactive in changing your connotation of “Happy Hour” and before you know it, it will become routine. Find an activity you are passionate about and get your girlfriends in on the plan! Instead of reapplying makeup & perfume as you transition from office to the bar, throw on some cute workout clothes and get your sweat on!
•If you like to dance, go to Zumba
•if you want to release stress and build lean, sexy muscle, hit the weight room
•if you want a more relaxing yet invigorating experience, grab a yoga mat and attend a Friday night yoga class
•If you are still sold on the idea of a traditional happy hour but want the best of both worlds, simply bring an extra set of clothes to change into after showering and go out to sushi afterwards, and allow yourself ONE glass of red wine (which contains powerful antioxidants if done in moderation)The main thing is that you got your workout in and relieved your stress the right way. Plus after working out intensely you will be less likely to throw away all of your hard work and forfeit your progress.
Those who take affirmative action in dealing with their emotions in a healthy way are likely to make better decisions, be more confident, and lead a better quality of life.
