One of the most effective tools when planning on redecorating a room or house is to have a good solid plan before beginning. Follow these steps to help guide you through the process. If in doubt, call a designer!
· Choose the scope of the project. Are you working on one room, a part of a house, or the whole house? If doing the whole house, break each room into its own project.
· Collect inspiration and find your style if you are uncertain about it. Collect a smattering of images that you like (Houzz.com is a great resource for this) with no restraint. Don’t worry at this point on whether or not they will work together.
· Start to put together images and colors that you want to use. Narrow down styles until you feel like you have something cohesive that gives you a context to work within. When you start to shop, don’t buy items that won’t fit into this context. This is how cohesiveness gets lost. If you're attracted to a lot of different styles tat don't work well together, choose just a few directions to go in with your space and you will save yourself from getting a lot of great things that don’t relate to each other.
· Determine the funciton of the room. What will you be doing in this room? What type of storage do you need? What type of lighting will you need for the tasks at hand? Do you need comfortable furniture or more formal seating?
· What is your budget? How much can you spend on the space?
· Draw out a few arrangement options.
· What do you already have that you want to use in your new space? Can things be repurposed? What do you need to get rid of to make space for the new items? Make a plan to sell, give away or trade out old items.
· Create a timeline for changes. Start with getting rid of old items, fixing anything that needs fixing, painting, then moving into room construction.
· Put it all together! Be amazed at the fruits of your efforts and enjoy your new space.
