Red Wings lose another shootout

The Detroit Red Wings lost last night 3-2 in a shootout to the San Jose Sharks at the Joe.

The Wings got goals from the two players that just recently returned to action in Johan Franzen and Jason Williams.  Franzen scored his in the first period with a shot from the top of the circle.  Williams tied the game up in the third with a great move followed by a great shot.  Jimmy Howard had a good night and a lucky one at that when he was saved by the goal post three different times in the game.  He finished the game with 24 saves.

For Detroit, they have now lost 4 of their last 5 shootouts dating back to Jan. 16th, and 7 of their last 8 games that have gone past regulation.  It's nice to at least get the one point by getting to overtime, but if the Wings want to make the the playoffs this year, they will need to start winning these games and getting that second point.

As of now, Detroit would not be in the playoffs.  They are 9th in the Western Conference and just a point behind Calgary for the 8th spot needed to get to post-season play.  They aren't alone in the race either as Dallas and Anaheim are right there with us.

We will see how badly the team wants it as the season starts coming to the end.  I believe they'll find that spark and surge into the playoffs before the year is over.  Lets just hope the Wings don't make us sweat too much.
