As we bask in the glow of last night’s 2-1 Red Sox win in Oakland behind a solid performance by Daisuke Matsuzaka, it seems an appropriate moment to celebrate a few of their more important starring roles: namely their penchant for supporting a number of excellent causes in and around our community.
Here are but three examples, chosen because they are looming large on the upcoming calendar of events:
- David Ortiz will auction off the bat, cleats, and batting gloves he used when he became the first Red Sox All Star to win the Home Run Derby. All proceeds will benefit the David Ortiz Children’s Fund, a non-profit organization committed to providing critical pediatric services to children in New England and the Dominican Republic. Bids will be accepted through 12 midnight EST on July 27, 2010. For more information, please visit www.davidortizchildrensfund.org.
- The Josh Beckett Foundation will host the Fourth Annual Beckett Bowl on July 29 at Lucky Strike Lanes in Boston. Presented by Foxwoods, the event benefits Children’s Hospital and includes a celebrity bowling tournament, live and silent auctions, and a concert by country star Jason Aldean at the House of Blues Boston. For more information, please visit www.beckettbowl.com.
- WEEI and NESN will hold their 9th Annual Jimmy Fund Jimmy Fund Radio-Telethon on Thursday, August 19 and Friday, August 20, on WEEI Sports Radio Network and New England Sports Network. Though not directly sponsored by a Red Sox player, the event supports the club’s long-standing beneficiary and in the past has included participation by such Sox stars as Jon Lester, Mike Lowell, Jonathan Papelbon, Dustin Pedroia, Tim Wakefield, and others.
