Yesterday the Boston Red Sox interviewed their second candidate for the job of team manager; former Red Sox third base coach Dale Sveum.
Since leaving the Red Sox after the 2005 season, Sveum's been with the Milwaukee Brewers, first as a bench coach, third base coach and hitting coach with a brief stint as interim manager when the team fired Ned Yost. Ben Cherington isn't concerned at all with his reputation in Boston as an overly aggressive third base coach:
“I don’t see how that’s relevant,’’ said Cherington. “He’s done a lot of different things in baseball. We’re looking at the entire body of work. I think his experience as a third base coach is a benefit to him. He’s been through some adversity in Boston and a lot of our candidates won’t have been through that.’’
The Red Sox aren't the only team interested in Sveum. Both the Chicago Cubs and St. Louis Cardinals are looking for managers as well and Sveum is reported to be on both their short lists of interviewees so the Red Sox already have some competition. That competition extends to two more candidates that all three teams are interested in, Texas Rangers pitching coach Mike Maddux and Cleveland Indians bench coach Sandy Alomar, Jr. Both the Cubs and the Red Sox asked for and received permission to speak with Maddux and Alomar thought it's unknown right now in what order they'll be seen by Ben Cherington.
