Boston Red Sox outfielder Bryce Brentz accidentally shot himself in the leg when he was cleaning his gun. According to a Yahoo! Sports report on Feb. 9, the baseball player experienced a bullet that traveled through his left leg from one side to the other.
However, Brentz is on the mend after experiencing the self-inflicted gun wound that happened in his home, says Red Sox general manager Ben Cherington via The Associated Press. The ball club's head honcho remarked that Bryce "got lucky" considering what happened to this gun-toting ball player.
Cherington added, "[This gun accident] is a serious thing and [Brentz] has to be careful. He’s here in Fort Myers [in Florida] and he’s recovering." The Red Sox chief said that although the injury that resulted "is not going to get in the way of his future," Bryce "won’t be in big league camp."
With that in mind, pundits were surprised that Brentz was not among the 19 non-roster players asked to take part in major league camp when the list came out on Saturday, but now the reason is clear. A right-handed hitter, Brentz has been an outfield prospect for the coming season.
That said, Cherington indicated this is still in the offing. The Boston Red Sox general manager hinted that Brentz might have recovered enough to play in games toward the close of spring training.
Still, the gun accident is no laughing matter. Even though Brentz wasn't breaking any laws, the 24-year-old was playing with fire, literally, and now realizes as he recovers how serious a situation he found himself in when the gun accident occurred. Talk about a game changer.
