The overhaul of the Chicago White Sox roster might not be done just yet. The Boston Red Sox are looking to strengthen the backend of their rotation and their interest in Gavin Floyd to fill that role seems to be reappearing. Reports from the winter meetings had previously linked the Red Sox to the right-hander back in December.
Floyd is twenty-eight and has two years left on his current deal. He will make $7.5 million this season and $9.5 million in 2013 (club option). While his stuff wasn’t great last season he did pitch 193.2 innings over 31 games and carried a 4.37 ERA/1.16 WHIP.
For the right price, GM Kenny Williams is said to be willing part with the former first round pick of the Philadelphia Phillies. If the Red Sox are willing to give up any combination of Will Middlebrooks/Jose Iglesias/Xander Bogaerts/Felix Doubront, it might make sense for Kenny to add more talent to his minor league system that isn’t far off from being major league ready. As the talent pool gets thinner and thinner in the free agent market, this might be the best time to sell on a guy like Floyd considering the 2012 club doesn’t appear likely to compete in AL Central division.
