Red Sox: April report card

Koji Uehara continues to be the top of the class for the Red Sox.

Isn't it fitting after the winter we had that the first month of the season comes to an end with inclement weather cancelling a game in Boston? It seems like summer is never going to come this year. It also seems like the Red Sox will never make it over .500.

The Red Sox finish April with a 13-14 record. They trail Baltimore and the hated Yankees (weren't they supposed to be washed up?) in the standings. It is time for me to flip open my grade book and fill out my report card with first-month grades and some brief comments.

A.J. Pierzynski: C-. Has had trouble fitting in. Defense has been, surprisingly, bad.

Mike Napoli: A-. Top of the class in most every offensive category.

Dustin Pedroia: B. Heart and soul of the team, but where has the power (0 HR, 6 RBI) gone?

Xander Bogaerts: B-. Needs to work on his defense moving to his left. Bat has been adequate.

Will Middlebrooks: Incomplete. Only 27 at-bats, so he has some catching up to do. Lineup needs his power.

Grady Sizemore: C. On the bright side, he has stayed healthy. Production has dropped off, dramatically.

Jackie Bradley, Jr.: B+. He is playing defense at a Gold Glove level. His bat is starting to come around.

Shane Victorino: Incomplete. Red Sox have missed his spark.

Jonny Gomes: C-. Striking out way too much. He needs to be more aggressive at the plate.

David Ortiz: C+. He got what he wanted, now it's time to produce. Too many unexcused absences so far.

Jon Lester: A-. Teammates have not been kind to Jon, but he is pitching like an ace.

Clay Buchholz: C-. Saw an uptick in velocity last outing, but, overall, his stuff has not been overpowering.

John Lackey: A-. A couple of rough starts, but has proven last year was not a fluke.

Felix Doubront: F. Might need to get demoted if his performance doesn't improve substantially.

Jake Peavy: A. Continues to make the most of his diminished skills. Smartest, most competitive player on the team.

Junichi Tazawa: A-. Had one bad day the entire month.

Edward Mujica: F. Did not come as advertised. Have to wonder about an injury.

Andrew Miller: A-. He was dearly missed the second half of last season.

Craig Breslow: F. Has continued his tailspin which began last postseason.

Burke Badenhop: C. Been relegated to mostly mop up duty. Not expecting much more from him.

Chris Capuano: A. Veteran has been the biggest surprise so far. Has not given up a run yet this year in 14.1 innings.

Koji Uehara: A+. What more can anyone say about Koji?

John Farrell: A-. Let's see how he does now that his lineup has all its pieces in place.
