Tripwire Interactive has announced that Red Orchestra 2: Heroes of Stalingrad will be available for free on April 23 for only 24 hours as part of a special Steam promotion.

This is not a free weekend promotion as gamers who download Red Orchestra 2: Heroes of Stalingrad could keep it for life. To acquire it, players will have to have to simply add it to their library from the Steam store during the 24 hour period.

Steven Bogos of The Escapist described the promotion as, "I played Red Orchestra 2 when it first came out, and while it was too hardcore for someone who'd grown up on Quake, I'm sure fans of more realistic military shooters would appreciate it. But hey, can't complain about a free game!"

Jordan Devore of Destructoid described the promotion as, "I look at this as a clever way to get grow the community with people who would in all likelihood otherwise never play the game. I only wish more developers were willing to try promotions like this."

Tripwire Interactive also plans to have a free weekend promotion for the Rising Storm DLC sometime soon.

Red Orchestra 2: Heroes of Stalingrad is squad based multiplayer shooter that is set during the Battle of Stalingrad. The series started as a mod for Unreal Tournament 2004 that won the Make Something Unreal contest and grew to become a stand alone game.
