Today, Oct. 20, 2013, Chicago’s Red Line reopened at approximately 4 a.m. CDT. Construction began on the Red Line on May 19, 2013 (Please read my article, CTA’s construction slows travel to southern, Forest Preserve Golf courses.), so this work lasted exactly five months.
This construction reduced travel times between Roosevelt Road and 95th Street. To get this travel time reduction, construction workers installed new rails, rail ties and ballast. Workers also refurbished these stations: 95th Street, 87th Street, 79th Street, 69th Street, Garfield, 47th Street, 35th Street and Chinatown. This project cost $425 million dollars.
Instead of relying on Halsted Street buses, after disembarking from the Red Line trains at 95th Street, golfers going to Burnham Woods Golf Course, George Dunne National Golf Course, Joe Louis Golf Course and River Oaks Golf Course, can board the Pace #352 bus. Then, if going to Joe Louis Golf Course, they can exit the #352 bus at 129th Street and Halsted Street in Chicago, Ill. They will need to walk south on Halsted Street, up and over the bridge, to 131 Street where they will see the golf course on the west side. (They will be in Riverdale, Ill.) Golfers going to Burnham Woods Golf Course, George W. Dunne National Golf Course or River Oaks Golf Course would need to take the #352 bus south to the Pace Harvey Transportation Center in Harvey, Ill., which is at 15330 Park Avenue.
At the Pace Harvey Transportation Center, golfers going to Burnham Woods Golf Course would need to take the #350, Pace bus eastbound to Burnham Avenue in Burnham, Ill. After disembarking from this bus, golfers will need to walk ¼ miles north on Burnham Avenue to get to Burnham Woods Golf Course. (This is a strenuous walk uphill and downhill.) The golf course is on the east side.
At the Pace Harvey Transportation Center, golfers going to River Oaks Golf Course or George W. Dunne National Golf Course will need to take the #364, Pace bus. Golfers should take the eastbound bus to get to River Oaks Golf Course, where they will exit at 1 Park Avenue in Calumet City, and walk about 200 feet to the course’s entrance. Golfers should take the westbound bus to get to George Dunne, and disembark at Central Avenue in Oak Forest. They will then have a ¼ mile walk south along Central Avenue to Dunne’s entrance, which is on the west side.
CTA and Pace have changed their fare structure. All riders must now use Ventra cards, on which they can pay fares on both CTA trains and buses, and Pace buses. After placing money on these MasterCards, and registering online, they can use these cards as regular, debit cards.
