Red Hot Chili Peppers joining Super Bowl halftime show

The Red Hot Chili Peppers are reportedly joining pop star Bruno Mars on-stage during the Super Bowl XLVIII halftime show, per a Friday report from the Los Angeles Times.

Mars is expected to make a formal announcement of the Super Bowl partnership during Fox’s coverage of the New Orleans Saints at the Seattle Seahawks game on Saturday. An NFL spokesman referred comment to Mars’ spokeswoman, who declined to confirm the Los Angeles Times’ report.

The Red Hot Chili Peppers were already expected to be in the vicinity of MetLife Stadium, as they are lined up to play a pre-Super Bowl show hosted by WFAN sports radio in Brooklyn the Saturday before the NFL’s championship game.

The addition of one of the most popular bands of the 1990’s will help to broaden the appeal of the halftime show beyond the under-25 age group that forms the majority of Mars’ fan base.
