According to statistics released by Facebook’s Data Science Team, the popularity of the red equal sign of the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) has broad support all over the country, particularly in college towns.
Graphs created by the Data Science Team show the trend to change Facebook profiles to the original red equal sign or its spinoff, surged on Tuesday and Wednesday. Among the highest concentration of support were found in Ann Arbor, (University of Michigan), Orange (University of North Carolina), Durham (Duke University) Monroe (Indiana University), Johnson (University of Iowa), Athens (Ohio University), Dane (University of Wisconsin), Boulder (University of Colorado) and Travis (University of Texas at Austin). Among the highest ranking metropolitan areas in the country were San Francisco County, San Mateo County and Washington D.C.
On Monday, the Human Rights Campaign urged supporters of marriage equality on its Facebook Page to switch their Facebook profile photo to a red equal sign. Statistics reveal the following day, the image had created approximately 10 million impressions in all 50 states and all over the world. Since then, HRC original red-hued image has been shared nearly 200,000 times and the original post has appeared over 18 million times in people’s newsfeeds. Also on Twitter, HRC's post on Twitter on Monday was its most ever retweeted message -
Our country is ready for #marriageequality. RT if you agree it's time. #UnitedforMarriage pic.twitter.com/qeKshFbkX2
The trend to display the red equal sign or its several variations is expected to continue until a decision from the U.S. Supreme Court is announced, possibly in June.
