When you hear red carpet, you think Glitz and Glam but what you don't really get to see is the chaos! If you aren't part of a huge entertainment media conglomerate like E!, TV Guide, EW, Extra, Access Hollywood, then getting opportunities to interview the big names on the red carpet can be daunting if not impossible.
If you are lucky and get a spot on the red carpet, make the most of it! Get to know and be friendly with the network publicists. Not all the celebs on the red carpet have their own publicist so they will use the network's publicity team to help navigate them on the red carpet. I also work on another site and was privy to be included on the red carpet press line so I did the best I could, however, when the ball gets rolling, things get chaotic very quickly.
As you will see from the video, we were so lucky that Ryan Murphy, show creator and executive producer for American Horror Story: Coven, decided to start on the tail end of the carpet rather than the beginning. YAY! As the night wore on, during the interview with Kathy Bates, I was snagged by Denis O'Hare's publicist who said he was ready to give me an interview...she didn't mention that his friend, the one and only Kristen Bauer van Straten (aka Pam from HBO's True Blood) would pop in and say hello; not that I'm complaining - love her! Needless to say, the interview with Kathy Bates was sporadic, at best, but then I got the goods with Denis.
Don't get me wrong, I am not (really) complaining, but I wanted to share the cold hard facts of attending red carpet events. For the low guys on the media food chain, interviews are not easy to come by. But, even the big media sites get sidestepped on occasion. Regardless, the carpet press lines can be treacherous so be on your A+ game and make friends with those around you...always helps to be nice to those you're standing next to!
