Red Bull’s headquarters, Fuschl am See

See also

Everyone knows Red Bull, but do you know the quaint town of Fuschl am See, where the headquarters of the famous energy drink is located? This small village with its 1,400 inhabitants is positioned in the Salzburg region near Bad Ischl. Fuschlsee (the word “See” means lake in German) is one of a small chain of lakes found in Austria’s Salzkammergut, only 20 miles from the Salzburg city center. The lake has extensive hiking trails, beaches for summer swimming, and picturesque snowy landscapes in the winter. The region looks very much like the scenes from “The Sound of Music” with its castles and rolling hills.

According to archeologists, the chains of small lakes were formed in the last ice age and are connected by small rivers. People have been drawn to the beauty of this natural glacial lake for centuries. Fuschl dates back to the 8th century, and like everything in Austria, has extensive historic importance.

Today the villages surrounding Fuschlsee are built with tourism in mind. There are plenty of vacation rental homes, hotels, and inns to choose from. The views from the rooms are stunning. You can watch the golden sunset over the mountains, or you can observe the reflection of the castle in the lake, watch swans float by peacefully on crystal clear waters, or just relax and enjoy this natural serenity.

For visitors Fuschl offers a beautiful lakeside castle hotel, with multi-functional rooms for events and functions, and offers a 9-hole golf course - a true paradise for golfers. The region also holds multiple classic car rallies for automotive fans. The guest rooms are admired by many due to their balance between tradition and modernity, featuring a unique collection of works by the Old Masters. Rooms are carefully decorated. Each suite has been furnished with antique furniture from a different epoch - from Renaissance to Art Nouveau – and provides an unforgettable stay for every guest.

The website boasts: “With its incomparable lakeside location, this castle has hosted archbishops, empresses and film stars since 1450. The seven Tower Suites offer an ambience of incomparable elegance. A synthesis of the arts with historic pictures: The lovingly restored "Sissi" suite, which offers a clear view of the emerald green Fuschlsee.” Management is certainly proud of their creation and service.

Since you are so close, don’t miss a scenic drive to Salzburg, which will place you at the center of one of Europe's most beautiful cities. Enjoy a day trip and visit the many churches, museums, Wolfgang Amadeus Birthplace, and relish the grand architecture this city has to offer.

For nature lovers, hiking is one of the most sought after pastime and you can hike the six-mile shoreline, enjoying the villages on route. After the hike you can jump into the lake for a refreshing swim. Even though the lake is snow fed it has some of the warmest water in the Salzkammergut. The trail is not strenuous and makes a great family outing. Sailing, canoeing, and windsurfing are also popular activities. To preserve the tranquility of this favorite lake, only electric motors are allowed on Lake Fuschl.

If you like to stay in one place you can join the locals in fishing. Fishing has been a longstanding tradition and remains popular to this day. Fishing season runs from April 1 to November 30, and a fishing license is required.
