Red Bull Flugtag entries went over like a lead balloon, literally. This Red Bull Flugtag event consists of launching homemade machines off a 30-foot dock in a bizarre attempt at getting their very heavy entries to take flight. While some did glide a bit, most acted like a lead balloon and just plopped into the water, according to the LA Times on Sept. 21.
One of the many global Red Bull Flugtag events took place in Long Beach, California over the weekend, but these competitions are held all over the nation. Teams of up to five people enter this competition to show off some very bizarre and entertaining entries.
The folks that enter this event take weeks, even months in creating their entries which in the end get rolled off a dock and fall like a cement block into the water. If you’re one of the lucky ones, your machine will become airborne for a few seconds before taking the plunge.
The crafts and their passengers are judged on creativity, showmanship and distance flown. This competition is held all over the world with Long Beach being just one of the locations. Miami, Washington D.C., Chicago and Dallas also held Red Bull Flugtag competitions.
Last year’s Red Bull Flugtag record breaking flight of 228-feet was beat by the Chicken Whisperers team. This team got their man-made flying machine airborne for 258-feet. Check out the video above and see why it’s a fun day offering entertainment more so that promoting aviation!
