Recycling Your Christmas Gift Packaging and Decorations

Every year, Christmas brings a huge amount of gift wrap, bows, ribbons, decorations and more to homes across the county that must be disposed of once the holiday is over. But do you throw these items in the trash, or do you recycle them?

According to the L.A. Times, each December, 13.5% more recyclable materials are generated in Los Angeles than in any other month of the year. As an environmentally conscious person, it is important to recycle as much of that material as possible so it doesn't end up in the trash.

Each Los Angeles community has its own recycling policies that state what can be recycled and what must be thrown in the trash. Do you know what your community's policies are so you can optimize the amount of packaging that you recycle?

The LA Times put together a thorough chart, by community, that shows which items can be recycled and which items must be discarded in the trash. It covers everything including different types of gift wrap, gift bags, toy packaging, Christmas trees, tree decorations, Christmas lights and Christmas cards.
