Recycling can put cash in the pocket as well as help out the environment. Some recycling centers pay cash for steel cans (such as soup cans) as well as aluminum cans. Locations and current rates (as of Aug. 8, 2013) for recycling aluminum and steel cans in Evansville are as follows:

  • Henry Fliegeltaub Company - Location: 1600 Grove Street. Phone: (812) 423-6219 or (812) 305-4934. Hours: 7:30 a.m. to 3:15 p.m. on weekdays. Closed for lunch from 11:45 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Only metals are accepted for recycling. Price for aluminum cans: $0.44 per pound. Price for steel cans: $195 per ton (equivalent to $0.0975 cents per pound).
  • Material Recycling, Inc. - Location: 2340 N. Burkhardt Road. Phone: (812) 476-6422. Hours: 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on weekdays and 7:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. on Saturday. Only metals are accepted for recycling. Price for aluminum cans: $0.45 per pound. Price for steel cans: $0. (Steel cans are accepted, but no money is paid for them.)
  • Tri-State Resource Recovery - Location: 1500 Read Street. Phone: (812) 422-4193. Hours: 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. weekdays for all recyclables and 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon on Saturday for aluminum cans only. Price for aluminum cans: $0.50 per pound. Price for steel cans: $0. (Steel cans are accepted, but no money is paid for them.) Other items accepted at this location for recycling are separated into the following categories: plastic containers (#1 - #7), glass containers (separated into clear, brown, or green), books, mixed paper and magazines, newspaper, and cardboard.
  • Trockman & Sons - Location: Intersection of Highway U.S. 41 S. and Bayse Avenue. Phone: (812) 425-5271. Hours: 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on weekdays. Only metals are accepted for recycling. Price for aluminum cans: $0.40 per pound. Price for steel cans: $0.10 per pound.

The following recycling facilities accept aluminum and / or steel cans, but do not pay for any recycled items:

  • Allied Waste Laubscher Meadows Landfill - Location: St. Joseph Avenue just north of Meier Road in Vanderburgh County. Phone: (812) 424-3345. Hours: 5:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. on weekdays and 6:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. on Saturday. Price for aluminum cans: $0. Price for steel cans: $0. This facility features one-stream recycling for plastics (#1 - #7), paper, and aluminum and steel cans. Cardboard is collected in a separate container. Glass is not accepted.
  • Wesselman Nature Society - Location: 551 N. Boeke Road at the north end of the parking lot, north of the Nature Center. Phone: (812) 479-0771. Hours: 7:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. daily. Price for aluminum cans: $0. Price for steel cans: $0. The organization does not pay for recycled materials but revenues it receives from recycling help pay for its nature programs. The center accepts aluminum cans, cardboard, mixed paper, white office paper, newspaper, telephone books, and magazines and catalogs. The items should be sorted into those categories and placed in separate bags (such as grocery sacks) or boxes for recycling.

When preparing items for recycling, remember that boxes should be flattened, and food containers should be clean and dry.
