Recycle batteries in Chicago

Toys, tools, gadgets, and watches have two things in common. First, many of us will receive one of these things as a gift his holiday season. Second, they all use batteries. What should you do with the batteries once they are all used up?

Batteries should not be thrown away with your regular household garbage. “Over time, [batteries] corrode and leak their contents out into the soil and consequently our groundwater supply,” says the City of Chicago’s Department of the Environment. Nobody wants a splash of battery acid in his or her tap water.

To dispose of batteries in a responsible way Chicagoans should head to their local Chicago Public Library Branch or neighborhood Walgreens store. Both locations will have a tall clear collection tube to deposit your used alkaline, lithium, button, and rechargeable batteries.
