Records fall at Rock 'n' Roll Dallas Half Marathon, Kiptoo and Kastor victors

DALLAS - Three-time Olympian and bronze medalist, Deena Kastor, 41, arrived in north Texas with records in mind, breaking records that is. Arguably the USA's greatest middle to long-distance runner with a dozen national records and one world record to her name set her sights on Sunday's Rock 'n' Roll Dallas Half Marathon. The relatively flat course profile and mild early springtime temperatures are ideal for fast finishes.

But cool and gusty winds kept a few records in tact

Kastor faced stiff headwinds for most of the first eight miles of the point-to-point course starting downtown before turning north and east through Highland Park. She narrowly missedthe US Women's Master's (age 40 and over) records for the 5k, 10k, and 15k marks. When she turned off of Mockingbird Lane south on Skillman the road declines and winds were to her back to the finish in Fair Park. She took advantage of the improved conditions and broke the 10-mile and 20k records in times of 53:13 and 1:08:13 respectively.

She finished the 13.1-miles in 1:11:57 to set a new women's course record by over five minutes but missed the US Women's Master's half-marathon by just eight seconds.

A close men's race

Julius Kiptoo, 36, of Kenya, and Colby Lowe, 24, of Southlake, TX, set a quick pace from the starting gun. Each runner traded places to lead a pack of five other athletes through most of the race. By the 10-mile mark Kiptoo and Low had broken away from their rivals to make it a two man race for the win. They entered Fair Park shoulder-to-shoulder for the final quarter mile to the finish. In the final 100 yards they were at a full sprint with Kiptoo breaking the tape in 1:06:02 just three seconds ahead of Lowe.

Spectators enjoyed the race too

Jennifer Collins, of Dallas, braved the chilly winds is cheer for two co-workers running their first half marathon. "I found a spot across the street from a rock band on the course. Everyone was dancing, singing, and yelling for the runners. It was so much fun!"
