Record heat, a deadly squall and a waterspout top the list of Michigan weather events on this day in history. From the National Weather Service archives here events that happened on July 3.

1945 - The steel tug, fishing [net boat] Rockaway was sunk by a sudden, very violent, Northwest squall off Grand Marais, Michigan in Lake Superior. May also have exploded. All 4 members aboard perished.

1947 - The temperature rose to 96° in Flint, which is the record high temperature for the day. This marked the fourth day in a row (June 30 - July 3) that record daily high temperatures were recorded in Flint!

1949 - The wood fish tug, [trolling boat] Roamer, swamped and sank in a sudden squall in the Munising West Channel in Lake Superior. Out of Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan. One person perished.

1966 - A five day heat wave peaked with temperatures in the upper 90s. The high of 99° set a daily record at Lansing, the second in a row following a high of 98° on the 2nd. Grand Rapids ties the record set in 1921 and 1949 with a high of 97°.

1999 - A waterspout damaged a boat house and storage building on a marina dock at Drummond Island. Property damage was $200,000.

2006 – A severe thunderstorm dropped golf ball sized hail (1.75 inch) 2 miles east of Lathrop, MI in Delta County. Thunderstorms produce two reports of tornadoes in St. Joseph County, one near Three Rivers and the other near Centreville.
