Record heat, a chilly day and shipwrecks top the list of Michigan weather events on this day in history. From the National Weather Service and Storm Prediction Center (SPC) archives here are the weather events that happened on April 10.

1850 - The wood schooner, 2-mast George Lawrence, while carrying 11,000 bushels of wheat, was bound Milwaukee for Buffalo, when she was cut by ice and sank in 48 feet of water in the Straits of Mackinac, 1 mile west of St. Helena Island in Lake Michigan. Out of Milwaukee, she was a loss of $17,500.

1933 - A wood U. S. Coast Guard motor rescue boat was on a rescue mission, when this small rescue craft was caught in the ice and crushed, a total loss in Whitefish Bay in Lake Superior.

1977 - A three day spell of 80° temperatures begins across Lower Michigan. Record highs include the 81° at Lansing, where temperatures would hit records of 82° on the 11th and 83° on the 12th. Grand Rapids also sets records with 82° on both the 11th and 12th. In Detroit the temperature rose from a pre-dawn low of 35° to an afternoon high of 86°, or a 51° rise, the greatest daily temperature rise ever recorded.

1989 – A chilly day across Lower Michigan with record cold temperatures. Grand Rapids starts with a record low reading of 15° and only warms to chilly record cool high of 32°. Other record low temperatures across the state include Lansing with 14°, Detroit 20°, and Flint 16°.

2011 – Lansing sets a new record beating 1977 with a high of 83°. Other records set on this day include Grand Rapids 85°, Muskegon 78°, and Flint 83°.
