There is an old saying by Issac Newton on his accomplishments, "If I have seen further it is by standing on the shoulders of Giants."

I feel it is somewhat unfair to entirely attribute my articles to my own authorship.  I have many-a-times changed my mind on various issues and have formed my opinions from the constant dialogue on animal rights ideology from various abolitionist authors.  Here, I'd like to share some of my favorites.  Be sure to check out the links to the following blogs to read more.

Why I Will Not Advocate Vegetarianism

It's very common for animal advocates to promote lacto-ovo vegetarian diets, even if they understand there is no moral difference between using an animal for meat vs. for secondary products like milk or eggs.  This post from "My Face is on Fire" by Mylene Ouellet discusses Ouellet's position against advocating vegetarianism and why we ought not accuse those with similar positions of "bashing vegetarians."

On Cruelty Videos

Every once in a while a new undercover video comes out from organizations like Mercy For Animals displaying animals being tortured by humans. Animal people tend to get very excited about these videos because they get a lot of attention.  In this post from "Unpopular Vegan Essays" by Dan Cudahy, Cudahy explains why we ought to be mindful of the conclusions made from these materials as well as the intentions of the organizations who put them out.

Welfare and Vegetarianism: A Vicious Circle

This short post from "Abolitionist Animal Rights" by James Crump eloquently describes how the welfarist movement "is designed to feed on itself forever."  Many animal people are primarily exposed to supposed "leaders" of the animal rights movement and are subsequently led to believe we need them and welfarism to effectively respond to the plight of animals.

Quotes on Slavery

Randy Sandberg, webmaster for Gary Francione's Abolitionist Approach (below) as well as his own VegansforPeace.com, has been teasing us with the occasional quotes from the slavery abolitionist era for some time now.  Finally, he has assembled a site full of compelling quotations from modern-day thinkers as well as insightful quotes from abolitionists of human slavery.

The World Peace Diet Hits #1.  Can we all please promote veganism now?

Vincent Guihain of "We Other Animals" wants to know why advocacy groups are not promoting veganism.  Going vegan is the easiest it has ever been and is most consistent with some of the ideologies of animal groups.  Yet these groupss promote vegetarianism or leave veganism as merely one possible way of "reducing suffering."

"Of course, it doesn’t necessarily follow from this that there are millions and millions of people who are just waiting to go vegan. But surely, they’ll never go vegan unless we ask them to do so, make it clear to them why we think they should and, most important, help them to do so. Education is more than just handing someone a flier or dressing up in a chicken suit."

A Short Note on Abolitionist Veganism as a Single-Issue Campaign

Even among animal groups who claim to align their approaches to abolitionist philosophy, single issue campaigns (SICs) remain a popular education tactic.  This post from "The Abolitionist Approach" by Prof. Gary L. Francione explains what constitutes a SIC and argues why they are problematic morally and practically.  Also see the many resources on this site for videos, interviews, and other literature on the Abolitionist Approach.
