There are many types of Spirits in the cosmos just as there are many humans on Earth. In the same way that we are selective in choosing the company we keep in our physical lives, we also need to be selective when calling on the spirit world to help us. Our Spirit Guides are recognized by the resonance we feel with them. Their nature is loving, and wise, and they have information to convey that is relevant to our life path.
If a Spirit contacts you that does not meet these criteria, it is advised that you dismiss the entity. This does not necessarily mean that the entity is harmful or negative; it simply implies that this particular Spirit does not have the level of wisdom necessary to assist you in the highest way. Occasionally when a person is experimenting, they may use a device such as a Ouija© board. When I was very young, my girlfriend and I liked to play with the Ouija© to ask questions about boys that we liked. It never occurred to us to be specific about what type of Spirit we were contacting. Although I do not think that we called in any malicious entity, we may have invited in someone who was just bored and saw this as an opportunity to have someone to talk to. This is why it is very important to be able to recognize what type of beings you are working with. Be implicitly clear that you are intentionally calling in those Spirit Guides that are working with you on your highest path. It is also why it is advised not to use a Ouija© board for anything other than amusement.
Our Guides usually assist us all throughout our lives. As we advance in our awareness, new Guides may show up to advise us at higher levels. It is also possible that there will be a changing of the guard, so to speak. One Spirit Guide may be predominant for an extended period of your life, to be replaced later by another. It is most common, however, that your primary guides will be with you throughout your life.
The more that we work with our Spirit Guides, by contacting them on a regular basis, the more it is that we can develop clarified communication with them. Not all Spirits work with us as Guides. Therefore, we must be able to identify those who are our authentic Spirit Teachers. Thus, I emphasize the importance of calling in protection and having a clear focus before you begin to contact them. If you have taken appropriate steps to achieve this, you are not likely to attract any Spirit other than those that work with you for the highest good.
