Recipe: Hakam Cocktail

A Hakam cocktail is a dry gin-based drink, made with Italian vermouth, Curacao, orange bitters and angostura bitters. Shaken in a cocktail shaker to add a bit of juniper berry flavor, the Hakam cocktail is a strong, semi-bitter drink. Typically served straight up in a chilled cocktail glass, the Hakam cocktail makes a wonderful drink for spring and summer when served in a short cocktail glass with crushed ice, or poured into a highball glass and filled with club soda. This recipe makes one Hakam cocktail.

Ingredients and Tools:

Cocktail shaker

Ice cubes

2 oz. dry gin

2 oz. dry Italian vermouth

2 dashes Curacao

Dash orange bitters

Dash angostura bitters

Chilled cocktail glass

Orange wedge, for garnish

Step 1:

Fill a cocktail shaker halfway with ice cubes.

Step 2:

Add the dry gin, dry Italian vermouth, Curacao, orange bitters and angostura bitters to the cocktail shaker.

Step 3:

Cover the cocktail shaker and shake gently for 10 to 15 seconds. Don’t shake too hard, you’ll bruise the gin.

Step 4:

Strain the contents of the cocktail shaker into a chilled cocktail glass.

Step 5:

Garnish the drink with a fresh orange wedge and serve immediately.


For a sweet touch, add one-half tablespoon of grenadine syrup to the cocktail shaker before shaking.
