Recent storm cycle brings snow to Colorado ski resorts

Nothing beats a powder day. And since the ball dropped in Times Square to usher in 2014, Colorado skiers are lucky to be getting a lot of them. It's only the middle of January yet some Colorado ski resorts have seen more than two feet of snow fall since January 8. Whatever snow dances, powder dreams and prayers to Ullr, the Norse god of snow, skiers have been doing, they've been working.

According to Colorado Ski Country USA (CSCUSA), a widespread winter storm that entered Colorado on January 8 delivered powder days to all 21 CSCUSA resorts. The weather system dumped up to 31 inches in some Colorado places as of January 14, and more was expected to fall--and did--two days ago. This was after resorts in Lake Tahoe and Utah received some quality snow dumps and had conditions to brag about.

Since the snowstorm began last week, CSCUSA resorts have received an average of 20 inches of new snow with 18 resorts recording double-digit snow totals and seven resorts see two feet or more of snow blanket their terrain. Now certainly is the time to hit the slopes in Colorado if you're searching to ski powder. Here's a rundown of the snow totals at CSCUSA resorts as of January 14, 2014:

  • 31 inches: Copper Mountain and Steamboat
  • 27 inches: Winter Park and Silverton
  • 25 inches: Eldora
  • 24 inches: Arapahoe Basin and Ski Granby Ranch
  • 23 inches: Loveland and Sunlight Mountain Resort
  • 22 inches: Crested Butte (the resort announced yesterday that they'd be opening Third Bowl today)
  • 19 inches: Telluride
  • 20 inches: Ski Cooper
  • 17 inches: Snowmass
  • 16 inches: Aspen Highlands, Monarch Mountain and Powderhorn
  • 15 inches: Aspen Mountain
  • 14.5 inches: Howelsen Hill
  • 9 inches: Buttermilk and Durango Mountain Resort
  • 6 inches: Wolf Creek (which already had one of the best bases in the state at 61 inches)
